Website redesign / Domain change
Should You Change Your Domain During a Website Redesign?
A redesign does not require a new domain. Change it only when a durable business reason outweighs the migration cost and risk.
Require a business reason
Keep the current domain when the business name, market, and ownership remain relevant. A shorter or more fashionable address rarely justifies disrupting established links, customer habits, email, campaigns, and search signals.
A change may be reasonable after a verified rebrand, merger, legal requirement, major market shift, or move away from a domain the business cannot safely control. Confirm ownership and recovery access for both the old and new domains before committing. See the domain and hosting ownership guide for the account controls to retain.
Understand the combined migration
Changing design, content, platform, URLs, and domain at once makes diagnosis harder. Inventory every indexable URL, valuable backlink, campaign destination, form, integration callback, asset reference, and email use connected to the old domain.
Decide which changes must launch together and which can be separated. If the domain change is not urgent, stabilizing the redesigned site first can reduce the number of variables in the migration.
Map every old URL
Create a one-to-one redirect map from each useful old URL to the most relevant new destination. Preserve content and page purpose where they still serve customers. Do not redirect every route to the homepage, and do not remove the old domain after launch.
Update canonical URLs, internal links, structured data, sitemaps, analytics, search tools, ads, profiles, directories, and owned documents. The SEO continuity guide covers the wider checks around a redesign migration.
Communicate and monitor the change
Tell customers, partners, and staff what is changing, especially when email addresses or login destinations are affected. Protect the old domain and mail configuration for as long as they remain needed for redirects, recognition, and account recovery.
After launch, verify representative redirects, indexing signals, forms, email, and important referral traffic. A domain change can be managed, but it should be treated as a business migration with a long tail, not as a design preference.
