Website redesign / SEO continuity
How to redesign a website without losing SEO.
Preserve valuable signals deliberately: inventory what works, map every changed URL, test the new site, and monitor the launch.
Capture what search already values
Before changing pages, export the current URLs and record which ones receive organic clicks, impressions, links, inquiries, or meaningful engagement. Note their target intent, title, main heading, canonical, indexation status, internal links, and structured data.
Search Console and analytics are useful here, but do not ignore pages that support navigation or convert visitors after another page attracts them. The goal is to understand the current system before deciding what to remove.
Give every current URL a deliberate outcome
Create a one-to-one migration sheet. Each old URL should remain unchanged, redirect to the closest relevant replacement, or return a deliberate removal response when no substitute exists. Avoid redirecting unrelated pages to the homepage; it does not preserve the original intent.
Keep strong content and metadata unless research supports changing them. When several pages are consolidated, carry forward the useful material and update internal links. Coordinate this work with a formal content migration plan.
Check the new site before it becomes public
- Crawlability: production pages are not blocked or marked noindex.
- Canonicals: each indexable page points to the intended production URL.
- Redirects: old-to-new mappings resolve in one step without loops.
- Content: titles, H1s, main copy, images, alt text, and structured data are present.
- Discovery: internal links and the XML sitemap include canonical URLs only.
- Function: forms, analytics, mobile layouts, and important journeys work.
The broader website redesign checklist covers ownership and launch items beyond search.
Monitor the launch rather than assuming it worked
Deploy redirects with the new site, submit the updated sitemap, and check representative URLs in Search Console. Crawl the public site to find broken links, redirect chains, accidental blocks, duplicate metadata, or missing pages.
A careful migration reduces avoidable loss, but no studio can guarantee unchanged rankings. Keep the change set explainable and respond quickly to technical errors.
Track organic landing pages and conversions over the following weeks. Compare like-for-like periods while accounting for seasonality and unrelated marketing changes.
