Website redesign / Checklist

A website redesign checklist.

The decisions to make before design starts, the checks to complete before launch, and the access to retain after handover.

By Northform

1. Define the business goal

Name the audience, the problem with the current site, and the action the new site should support. Choose one primary outcome, such as qualified inquiries, clearer product understanding, or easier content management.

Record a baseline where possible: current inquiries, important search pages, recurring customer questions, and any journey that regularly fails.

2. Inventory the current website

List every public page, form, download, integration, redirect, analytics tool, and account connected to the site. Mark each item as keep, improve, combine, remove, or add.

Preserve pages that already earn relevant search impressions unless there is a clear migration plan. A redesign should improve the experience without discarding useful history by accident.

3. Assign content responsibilities

  1. Confirm who writes and approves copy.
  2. List required photography, illustrations, video, and product data.
  3. Decide what will be migrated and what will be rewritten.
  4. Prepare legal, privacy, delivery, or policy information when relevant.
  5. Set deadlines for content that can block design or launch.

4. Define design and development requirements

Specify page types, mobile behavior, content editing, forms, integrations, accessibility needs, analytics, and performance expectations. Include empty, error, and success states for important interactions.

Use the broader guide to what a website redesign includes to turn this checklist into a complete scope.

5. Protect the launch

Before release, test key journeys, forms, mobile layouts, page titles, canonical URLs, redirects, analytics, sitemap, and robots rules. Confirm domain, hosting, email, and third-party access.

Keep ownership clear

At handover, retain the domain, hosting, analytics, email, repository, content system, and service accounts that the business depends on.
