How to Protect Paid Campaigns During a Website Redesign
A redesign can improve campaign performance, but an uncoordinated launch can break landing pages, tracking, audiences, and the promise made in an ad. Treat paid acquisition as a launch dependency.
Map every campaign dependency before design starts
List active and planned campaigns, channels, audiences, ads, destination URLs, conversion actions, forms, phone tracking, thank-you states, feeds, pixels, consent rules, and remarketing audiences. Record who owns each item and which campaigns cannot tolerate interruption.
Do not judge a landing page only by organic traffic or its place in the main navigation. A page with little visible traffic may be essential to a high-value campaign, partner link, or sales sequence. Include campaign owners in the pre-redesign audit before any URL is removed.
Preserve the promise between ad and page
For each campaign, document the audience, offer, search term or creative angle, proof, objection, and next action. The replacement page should continue that argument. Sending every ad to a redesigned homepage usually weakens relevance because the visitor must reconstruct the path themselves.
Keep proven campaign pages where they still work, or rebuild them as focused landing pages within the new system. Match the headline, offer, location, product, and call to action to the ad while keeping brand and compliance standards consistent.
Rebuild measurement as a tested specification
Define each conversion event, its trigger, required parameters, consent behaviour, attribution settings, deduplication rules, and reporting destination. Recreate tags in the new templates and test form submissions, calls, purchases, thank-you states, cross-domain journeys, and mobile flows in a staging environment.
Compare the new plan with the guide to preserving lead tracking during a redesign. Keep an annotated baseline from the old site so a reporting change is not mistaken for a sudden change in demand.
Coordinate URL, ad, and launch changes
Create a launch sheet for every paid destination: old URL, new URL, redirect requirement, ad update, owner, test status, and fallback. If a URL changes, update the campaign destination directly rather than relying on a redirect as the permanent route. Preserve query parameters and confirm that forms and checkout steps accept campaign traffic.
Launch during a staffed monitoring window. Test live destinations, conversion events, budgets, disapprovals, feeds, and page speed, then watch spend and conversion quality closely. Keep a rollback or pause decision ready for any critical path that fails.
