How to Preserve Lead Tracking During a Website Redesign

Define what counts as a lead and verify the full path from visitor action to team follow-up before launch.

Map the current lead path

List every form, booking action, phone or email link, and any chat route that generates inquiries. For each one, record the confirmation the visitor sees, the notification destination, the CRM record or pipeline it creates, and the event used to measure it. Include hidden fields only if they have a clear purpose.

Check the current setup with a real test inquiry. A tag firing on a submit button does not prove the form was accepted. The redesign measurement guide helps choose the outcomes worth preserving.

Specify the replacement before removing the old flow

Decide which actions remain, which are renamed, and which are retired. Write an event table with action, trigger, destination, and expected parameters; document consent requirements and data retention. Keep historical definitions where comparison matters, or explicitly note the break in the series.

Agree who owns CRM mappings, notifications, spam controls, and source fields. A redesign can look complete while quietly dropping leads because one webhook or address was not carried over.

Test the complete journey in staging

Submit distinct test inquiries for each route and verify on-screen confirmation, server acceptance, email delivery, CRM fields, assignment, and analytics. Test errors, duplicate submissions, mobile input, and a visitor who declines optional tracking. Do not rely on a tag manager preview alone.

Use clearly marked test records and remove or archive them according to the team's normal process. Repeat the critical cases against the production domain after launch; staging domains and consent settings can behave differently.

Monitor the first days after launch

Assign a person to review form deliveries, CRM queues, and analytics event counts immediately after release. Compare trends cautiously because traffic and campaign mix may change. A sudden disappearance of completed inquiries is a signal to investigate, not proof that the new design failed.

Keep a fallback contact route visible while problems are corrected. The prelaunch testing guide covers the wider set of checks alongside lead capture.
