Website redesign / Launch planning

When Should You Launch a Website Redesign?

The best launch date is one when the site and the people operating it are ready to handle the change.

Separate target date from release criteria

A campaign, event, or seasonal deadline can be a useful target. It should not silently waive critical checks. Agree which pages, content, forms, payments where relevant, redirects, analytics, and approvals must be complete before release.

The pre-launch test guide provides a practical review of the customer journey and technical essentials.

Avoid periods when support is unavailable

Choose a window when the people who can fix content, DNS, hosting, forms, and integrations are reachable. Give the business team time to review the live site and respond to inquiries. A low-traffic period can reduce disruption, but only if the required owners are present.

Consider campaigns, sales periods, holidays, product releases, and contractual commitments. A calendar date chosen only for convenience can create avoidable operational pressure.

Plan the switch and a recovery route

Write a short launch runbook with responsible people, order of changes, checks after deployment, and a way to restore the previous version if a critical failure appears. Record expected propagation or cache behavior so normal transition effects are not mistaken for broken pages.

Check redirects, sitemap availability, core pages, and inquiry delivery on the public domain. The handover guide covers what the operating team should receive.

Decide what can follow after launch

Separate defects that block release from improvements that can safely ship later. Keep a named owner and deadline for follow-up items. Do not use “launch later” as an unbounded holding state when the critical path is ready.

After launch, compare key journeys and inquiry data with the agreed baseline. A successful release is the start of monitoring, not the end of the project.
