How to Plan Ecommerce SEO During Website Design
Ecommerce SEO is shaped by catalogue structure, product data, filtering, rendering, and migration decisions long before metadata is written. Treat organic discovery as a design and platform requirement.
Connect customer demand to the catalogue
Research how customers describe products, problems, uses, materials, compatibility, sizes, and other decision factors. Compare that language with the proposed product taxonomy and merchandising model. Search demand should inform architecture, but it should not create hundreds of thin pages for trivial keyword variations.
Choose category and subcategory pages that represent durable customer choices and can offer a useful range. Define breadcrumbs and internal links so products are reachable through a clear hierarchy. The ecommerce navigation and filters guide helps align findability with shopping tasks.
Decide which filtered and search pages can be indexed
Faceted navigation can create a large number of URL combinations. Define which combinations have distinct demand, sufficient products, unique value, and stable inventory. Keep low-value combinations, internal search results, sort orders, and session parameters out of the index using an agreed crawl and canonical strategy.
Make sure the chosen platform can produce consistent URLs, status codes, canonicals, pagination behaviour, sitemaps, and crawlable links. Important content should not depend on an interaction or client-side state that search engines cannot reliably discover. Test empty, duplicate, redirected, and discontinued states as well as active categories.
Build useful product and category information
Product pages need accurate names, descriptions, specifications, variants, availability, price, delivery information, media, policies, and supporting content. Use manufacturer text only where permitted, and add information that helps customers make a decision rather than manufacturing superficial uniqueness.
Implement valid structured data that matches visible information and actual product states. Category copy should orient the shopper, explain meaningful choices, and link to deeper guidance where needed. Do not force long blocks above the product grid simply to repeat keywords.
Protect organic visibility through launch
Inventory current landing pages, search performance, backlinks, URLs, metadata, structured data, and internal links before a migration. Map every valuable old URL to the closest relevant destination; do not redirect everything to the homepage. Preserve content that still serves the same intent.
Test staging controls, redirects, canonicals, robots rules, XML sitemaps, rendering, structured data, analytics, and status codes before release. Monitor indexing, crawl errors, rankings, landing-page traffic, and revenue after launch. If the project replaces an existing store, use the ecommerce migration checklist to coordinate platform and content work.
