How to Manage a Content Freeze During a Website Redesign
A content freeze creates a stable point for migration and testing. It should control changes for a short, explicit period—not prevent the business from publishing necessary updates.
Define exactly what freezes and when
Set dates for the final source export, routine editing pause, migration, testing, and launch. State which content types, languages, forms, products, and system settings are included. A vague “stop editing the site” instruction creates avoidable uncertainty.
Keep the freeze as short as the migration and verification process allows. If the existing website must remain active, coordinate it with the plan for redesigning while the current site stays live.
Prepare one approved source before migration
Assign an owner for every important page and finish structural decisions before the freeze. Remove duplicates, identify redirects, confirm metadata and assets, and record any content that will not move. The migration inventory should show the old URL, new URL, status, owner, and last approved version.
Decide whether the CMS, document repository, or controlled export is authoritative. Do not let email attachments and private drafts become competing sources. The content migration guide covers the wider inventory and mapping process.
Create a controlled exception path
Urgent legal, operational, availability, or customer-service changes may still be necessary. Name who can approve them, where they are logged, who updates the current site, and how the same change reaches the new site. Every exception needs a timestamp and owner.
Avoid copying changes informally during final QA. Use one shared change log and a daily reconciliation point if the launch window spans several days. Pause nonessential campaigns that would create temporary pages or new dependencies.
Reconcile both versions before launch
Compare the migration snapshot, approved exceptions, and launch candidate. Check high-risk details such as contact information, prices, policies, forms, structured data, files, and scheduled announcements. Then test redirects and the final URL set.
After launch, release the freeze only when editors know which system is authoritative and access has been confirmed. Archive the change log with the handover so no late decision disappears. A well-run freeze protects accuracy without turning normal business change into chaos.
