Website redesign / Site consolidation

How to Consolidate Multiple Websites in a Redesign

Merging websites is a content and business decision before it becomes a migration task.

Define why the sites should become one

List the audiences, offers, markets, and teams represented by each site. Decide whether one domain can serve them clearly or whether separate experiences still have a legitimate role. Consolidation is useful when duplicate content and fragmented journeys confuse customers or operations.

If the audiences have genuinely different buying paths, design those routes intentionally inside the new structure. The multiple-audience guide helps frame that choice.

Inventory every property and dependency

Export page and URL lists from each site. Note useful content, search entry pages, links, forms, tracking, integrations, downloads, and legal notices. Identify who owns each domain, CMS, hosting account, and content approval. Resolve ownership before cutover.

Classify pages as keep, combine, rewrite, or retire. A combined page should answer the full customer question; merely pasting two old pages together usually preserves confusion.

Map old routes to relevant destinations

Create a URL-level redirect plan for pages that move or merge. Keep distinct pages when they satisfy distinct needs. For retired material, choose a relevant successor only when one exists. Update internal links and navigation to point directly to the new routes.

The content migration guide explains how to track these decisions through build and review.

Stage the release and ownership change

Test representative paths from both old domains, including forms and high-value landing pages. Assign one owner for each merged section and agree which legacy domains remain under control for redirects. Publish a sitemap that reflects the new structure.

Monitor broken paths and inquiry routing after launch. Plan a correction process, because a consolidation can expose dependencies that were invisible in the page inventory.
