Ecommerce / Budget guide

How much does an ecommerce website cost?

The platform subscription is only one line. The project cost follows the selling model, catalog, content, integrations, migration, and level of original design.

Separate the build from the commerce platform

An ecommerce budget usually has at least three layers: the one-time project, recurring platform and application fees, and ongoing operational work. A low monthly platform price does not include product strategy, original design, theme development, catalog preparation, integrations, migration, or quality assurance.

Ask vendors to separate these layers. This makes proposals comparable and exposes costs that continue after launch.

The selling model shapes the project cost

  • Catalog: product count, variants, bundles, subscriptions, and data quality.
  • Markets: currencies, languages, taxes, shipping, and regional rules.
  • Experience: navigation, search, filtering, merchandising, product pages, cart, and account flows.
  • Content: copy, photography, video, guides, and product entry.
  • Systems: payments, inventory, fulfillment, CRM, reviews, email, and analytics.
  • Migration: products, customers, orders, URLs, redirects, and tracking continuity.

The guide to what an ecommerce website should include helps turn these factors into requirements.

Budget for ownership after launch

Recurring costs may include the commerce plan, payment processing, applications, email, search, reviews, tax services, domains, and maintenance. Internal time for merchandising, customer service, fulfillment, returns, and product data also belongs in the operating model.

Custom features can reduce application dependence or create a better fit, but they also need documentation and maintenance. Choose complexity only when the business requirement justifies it.

Request estimates against the same written scope

Share the products, markets, payment and shipping rules, required integrations, existing platform, content readiness, preferred launch window, and approval process. Ask each studio to identify assumptions, exclusions, third-party fees, migration responsibilities, testing, training, and post-launch support.

Do not buy a number

Choose the smallest complete scope that supports real operations and a dependable customer journey. Missing product data or fulfillment logic cannot be repaired by visual polish.
