Ecommerce / Requirements
What should an ecommerce website include?
A complete store connects product discovery and buying with the operational systems that make every promise possible.
Customers need a reliable way to reach the right product
Plan the catalog hierarchy around how people shop, not only how inventory is stored. Categories, collections, search, filters, recommendations, and editorial routes should reflect real product attributes and decision patterns.
Navigation must remain understandable on mobile and with a large catalog. Define how new products, unavailable items, seasonal collections, and promotions enter and leave the structure without creating dead ends.
Product pages should answer the buying question
Include a clear product name, useful media, price, variants, availability, delivery or collection information, returns, and an unambiguous purchase action. Add specifications, dimensions, materials, compatibility, care, or sizing when they affect suitability.
Trust comes from accurate information and consistent policies. Do not hide important conditions until checkout. Make reviews, guarantees, or certifications visible only when they are genuine and relevant.
Cart and checkout must reflect the real commercial rules
- Cart: editable quantities, variants, prices, discounts, and clear totals.
- Checkout: appropriate guest or account options and usable validation.
- Payments: supported methods, currencies, taxes, and fraud controls.
- Fulfillment: shipping rates, regions, pickup, inventory, and delivery expectations.
- After purchase: confirmation, receipts, tracking, returns, and support routes.
Test normal purchases and difficult cases such as failed payments, unavailable stock, invalid addresses, discount conflicts, refunds, and abandoned sessions.
The storefront must connect to operations
Define product data ownership, inventory source, order flow, fulfillment, tax handling, customer service, email, analytics, consent, accessibility, search metadata, structured data, and backups. Document which system is authoritative when information appears in several places.
Every promise on a product page depends on data and a team process. Map those dependencies before selecting applications or custom development.
The ecommerce project preparation guide turns these requirements into inputs for a studio. For delivery scope, see Northform's ecommerce website design service.
