How to Prepare Brand Assets for a Business Website

A website project moves faster when the team knows which brand assets are approved, usable, and missing.

Inventory the files you actually have

Collect editable logo files, approved color values, typefaces, imagery, icon sets, and existing brand guidelines. Mark which versions are current and where each may be used. A screenshot of a logo or a compressed image from social media rarely works as a production source.

If there are no formal guidelines, document a short set of decisions: preferred logo treatment, visual tone, colors, typography, and examples that feel on brand. This is enough to expose conflicts early.

Check quality and usage rights

For each image and font, confirm the source, license, and permission to use it on the new site. Check whether photographs represent your current team, locations, products, and services. Identify assets that need new photography or illustration rather than stretching unsuitable material across key pages.

A polished visual system cannot make outdated or misleading imagery accurate. Prioritize assets that support the pages and claims most important to a buyer.

Separate identity from website content

Brand materials guide expression; they do not answer every customer question. Provide the offer, audience, service details, differentiators, process, and approved proof alongside the visual assets. The website content ownership guide explains how a business and studio can divide that work.

If the brand is changing, agree whether the website should use the current identity or launch with the new one. The rebrand sequencing guide covers that decision.

Create a practical handoff package

Use one shared folder with clearly named, approved files and a short note on missing items. Assign a person who can answer brand questions and approve new applications. Record decisions as the project progresses so design review does not restart the same conversation.

Do not wait for every decorative asset before beginning. The important gate is knowing which essential assets and rights are settled for the agreed page scope.
