How to Plan Product Recommendations for an Ecommerce Website

Recommendations should help a shopper complete or compare a purchase. More product rows do not automatically create a better store.

Choose the customer job

Decide whether each recommendation helps compare alternatives, complete a set, find a compatible accessory, replenish a product, or discover a related category. Give the module a label that explains that relationship. A generic heading such as ‘You may also like’ hides whether the suggestions are useful.

Do not place recommendation modules where they interrupt essential product information, cart review, or checkout completion. The primary purchase decision should remain clear.

Define data and rules

Start with rules the team can explain and maintain: shared attributes, verified compatibility, curated sets, or actual purchase relationships when the data is reliable and appropriate to use. Record exclusions for incompatible, unavailable, age-restricted, or otherwise unsuitable products.

Choose fallback behavior for new products, sparse data, and unavailable recommendations. A smaller relevant set is better than filling every slot with arbitrary bestsellers.

Design the complete interaction

Show enough information to judge the recommendation: image, name, price, important variant or compatibility detail, and availability. Make it clear whether selecting an item opens its product page, adds it to the cart, or changes the current product.

If a recommendation forms a bundle or changes price, explain what is included and how removal, discounts, returns, and stock work. Connect the behavior to the product page system and cart rules rather than adding an isolated widget.

Measure usefulness, not exposure

Track whether people engage with recommendations, add suitable products, complete orders, remove suggested items, or create support and return problems. Compare results by placement and recommendation type rather than treating every click as success.

Assign merchandising and technical ownership. Review rules when catalogue structure, stock, pricing, or customer behavior changes. Recommendations earn their place when they make a real decision easier and the operation can keep them accurate.
