Ecommerce / Click and collect

How to Plan Click and Collect for an Ecommerce Website

Click and collect is an inventory and store-operations service expressed through a website. The interface can promise only what stock data, staff, locations, and notifications can deliver.

Define what can be collected and when

Decide which products, variants, locations, order values, payment methods, and customer regions qualify. Establish whether inventory is reserved at cart, checkout, or staff confirmation, and what happens when a mixed basket cannot be fulfilled from one location.

Set pickup timing from real replenishment and staffing capacity. Avoid a universal “ready today” promise if stock accuracy or preparation varies. The product variant guide shows why availability must follow the exact purchasable item.

Make location choice clear before payment

Show collection availability on product pages or early in the cart when reliable data exists. Let customers choose by location name, address, distance, opening hours, accessibility, and pickup constraints. Preserve the choice as the basket changes and explain immediately when an item makes it invalid.

At checkout, distinguish collection details from billing details, show any fee, and repeat the selected location and expected readiness before order confirmation. Mobile customers need a compact selector that does not hide critical location information.

Connect the website to store operations

Map how the order reaches staff, how stock is reserved, who accepts or rejects it, what marks it ready, and which system is authoritative. Staff need customer details, items, collection window, exceptions, and a safe way to update status.

Design notifications for order received, ready for pickup, delay, substitution or cancellation, reminder, and completion. Test integration failures and duplicate events using the same principles as the ecommerce integrations guide.

Plan identification, expiry, and exceptions

Tell customers what to bring, where to go, when the location is open, whether another person can collect, and how long the order will be held. Define refund, cancellation, uncollected order, partial availability, damaged item, and return procedures.

Measure selection, checkout completion, readiness time, failed collections, cancellations, support contacts, and inventory mismatches by location. Start with the locations that can operate the service consistently, then expand from observed capacity.
