How to Plan a Wholesale Ecommerce Website
Wholesale ecommerce is not simply a retail store with larger quantities. It must reflect account relationships, price lists, pack sizes, credit, fulfilment rules, and the way sales teams help customers place repeat orders.
Define who may see and buy what
Map customer types, territories, currencies, tax treatment, brands, price lists, minimum orders, credit terms, and approval requirements. Decide what anonymous visitors can see, what requires a registered account, and which customers need negotiated assortments or contract pricing.
Design account application as a reviewed business process rather than instant registration when eligibility matters. Explain the information required, review time, and what access an approved buyer receives without exposing private commercial terms.
Build a catalogue for purchasing work
Structure products around identifiers, case packs, units of measure, variants, carton quantities, lead times, stock status, technical documents, and substitutes. Buyers should be able to search by SKU, reorder from history, and understand whether quantities refer to units, packs, or cases.
Use the product-taxonomy guide to align categories and attributes with real buying tasks. Keep marketing descriptions useful, but prioritise the precise data a purchasing team needs to place a correct order.
Design fast orders and clear exceptions
Support the order methods customers actually use: catalogue browsing, quick order by SKU, saved lists, CSV order where justified, quote requests, and repeat orders. Validate minimum quantities, pack multiples, stock, restricted items, shipping rules, and account limits before the buyer reaches the final confirmation.
Show how discounts, backorders, partial fulfilment, freight, tax, and payment terms affect the order. Do not label a request as a completed order if it still needs sales approval or a final freight quotation.
Connect ecommerce to sales and fulfilment
Choose which system owns product data, inventory, customer terms, orders, invoices, credit, and shipment status. Define sync timing and failure handling so the storefront does not accept a promise the warehouse or finance team cannot honour.
Plan assisted selling rather than removing it. Give representatives access to useful account context and provide clear routes for buyers who need a quote, product advice, or help with an exception. The B2B ecommerce planning guide can support the wider operating model.
