How to Plan a Fashion Ecommerce Website

Fashion ecommerce has to translate visual desire into a confident choice of product, colour, and size while keeping availability, delivery, and returns clear on a small screen.

Model styles, colours, and sizes before designing screens

Decide what counts as one product and what counts as a variant. Define stable identifiers, colour names, size systems, materials, care, price, imagery, availability, release status, and merchandising relationships. The catalogue model must support how staff actually buy, stock, describe, and retire products.

Choose category and collection rules that remain understandable as seasons change. Permanent categories should help customers navigate the range; temporary campaigns can curate products without becoming the only route to them. The product taxonomy guide covers the foundation.

Reduce uncertainty about size and fit

Show the size guide beside selection, not in a distant help centre. Explain the measurement method, garment dimensions where useful, model measurements, fit notes, stretch, cut, and regional size conversions. Do not label items simply true to size when the brand cannot define what that means.

Use images and video to answer practical questions: front, back, details, texture, drape, scale, and styling. Keep swatches labelled and accessible. When a colour choice changes the imagery, price, availability, or delivery date, update the page clearly without resetting the shopper’s other choices.

Make merchandising helpful rather than obstructive

Filters should reflect reliable product attributes such as category, size in stock, colour family, material, fit, occasion, and price. Let shoppers see applied filters and recover from zero results. Separate editorial collections from factual product properties so campaign changes do not corrupt catalogue data.

Cross-sells can complete an outfit, but they should never bury the selected item, size decision, delivery promise, or returns terms. Show low-stock and back-in-stock options only when inventory data and notification consent can support them.

Test the complete mobile purchase and return journey

Test variant changes, size availability, promotions, wishlists if offered, guest checkout, delivery thresholds, international addresses, taxes, failed payments, cancellations, exchanges, refunds, and returns. Confirm that order lines preserve the exact style, colour, size, price, and product image bought.

Assign ownership for product data, imagery, size guidance, collection publishing, inventory, promotions, customer service, and returns. Review search terms and return reasons together; repeated fit-related returns often reveal a content or product-data problem the interface alone cannot solve.

Make every product choice clearer
