How to Handle Out-of-Stock Products on an Ecommerce Website
Make availability clear while helping customers choose a credible next step when a product cannot be bought.
Define what unavailable means
A sold-out item, a temporarily delayed variant, a made-to-order product, and a discontinued line need different messages. Decide which statuses your inventory system can supply reliably, and who updates them when stock changes. Display availability near the purchase action and at the selected variant level when variants have separate stock.
Never accept payment as if an item is ready to ship when the business cannot meet that promise. If preorders or backorders are allowed, state the expected timing and conditions before checkout.
Offer the right next action
For a likely restock, let the shopper request a notification if the business can send one reliably. Explain what the alert means and avoid promising a date without evidence. For a discontinued product, direct them to a relevant replacement or category; for a temporarily unavailable size or color, show available variants without changing their selection unexpectedly.
The product variants guide explains how selection and stock messaging should work together.
Decide whether to retain the page
Keep a useful product page when people still search for the item and it offers an honest route to a replacement or related product. If the product is gone permanently and there is a close successor, a carefully chosen redirect may help; do not send every retired URL to a generic category without checking intent.
Align category listings and site search with the policy. An unavailable item might remain discoverable with a visible label, move lower in results, or be hidden from browsing while its page stays accessible. Choose based on customer need and catalog scale.
Test system behavior and customer communication
Verify that stock changes reach the website, cart, checkout, and any marketplace or warehouse integration in time. Test the moment the last unit sells, a variant becomes unavailable, and a restock alert is triggered. Provide a clear support route for orders affected after purchase.
Review abandoned searches, restock requests, and alternative product clicks to learn whether shoppers are finding a useful option. The ecommerce integrations guide helps identify where inventory data must flow.
